Pear

Key points:

  • Your main goal should be to balance the appearance of your upper body with the width of your lower body: think about how to accentuate your 'smaller' areas, and drawing attention to your upper body/face it you don't like the width of your hips and legs with more fitted tops and neckline interest.
  • To minimize the appearance of your bottom half, always wear solid-color pants/skirts and for the most slimming look, stick with dark brown, black or navy or jeans in a dark wash.
  • Avoid any embellishments or patterns on pants/skirts--they will only draw attention to the area you want to hide.

 Best Pants:

  • Many stylists recommend a flare style pant leg for pear shape girls. I agree with some caveats. I prefer a wide leg flare style, as opposed to the traditional flare leg that is slimmer through the knee and flared only at the bottom. I find many traditional flares to be overwhelming, especially on smaller frames, and even sometimes on my size 12 body. I prefer a straighter leg with a slight flare for jeans, straight or bootcut pants and wide-leg trousers on pear shapes.
  • The key here is to create points of attention at your upper body and towards your feet and skip your hips altogether.
  • Please don't wear capris. This style doesn't look good on anyone in my opinion, least of all pear shapes--the leg will typically hit in the middle of the calf, which is often the heaviest part of the leg--this will make you look 'stumpy' and shows off your relatively thicker legs/ankles.

Best Skirts:

  • You can wear almost any type of skirt, but what's most important is the length - stick to just under the knee or right above the ankle - don't EVER let the hem of a skirt hit your leg at its heaviest.
  • With any type of skirt, make sure the cut drapes smoothly over your hips and then either flares out to an a-line or circle style, or continues straight down. Do not buy into the pencil skirt trend, it will only accentuate your hips and legs.

Best Dresses:

  • An Empire waist (where the waist line is higher, almost right under the bust) style is by far the most flattering style for pear shapes.
  • Wrap dresses in simple prints or solid colors are perfect for you becuase they accentuate your waist and draw attention to your neckline.

 Best tops:

  • This is where you can have a little fun. If you're like me and you love your upper half and waistline, then you will want to accentuate it as much as possible.
  • A good top for you is a wrap style with a v-neck, this style defines your waist and draws attention towards your face with the v-neck: perfect!
  • Also, a boatneck top does wonders for balancing out hips. When choosing button down blouses and tops, pay close attention to the fit.
  • DO NOT choose tops that are boxy or have no shape, look for blouses that are nipped a bit in the waist (this goes for jackets as well) or have some detailing around the waistline like a belt or rouching.
